  1. Someone as special as Sam will never be forgotten. He will remain in my heart forever.

    With Deepest Sympathy,

    Doug Mulliner

  2. Sam was so much larger than life! He leaves a pair of extra large shoes to fill, and a son more than capable of filling them. We respected, adored and loved Sam. On behalf of your Dover, Delaware Torbert Funeral Chapels family, please accept our condolences on behalf of Senator William Torbert and late wife Doris, William Covell Torbert, and Gary Wallick. Godspeed Sam, thank you for all you taught us.

  3. Having met Sam in only the past 15 years it felt as though we had known him all of our life. His warmth, generosity and caring was so evident… so genuine and moreover was reciprocated by those around him. Please know how much we enjoyed spending time with the extended Douglass Family. We will miss Sam greatly.

    With our Deepest Sympathy.
    Mike and Kristine Rose

  4. We are among the vast audience to share in Sam’s unique qualities of grace and dignity and southern charm. He brought joy, personal support in times of need and a perfect blend of life as he envisioned it. Safe journey our friend, Nancy and Del

    • Bob Maners always said Sam was a “CLASS ACT”!
Many of the decade old stories from USC friends, substantiating that comment, would probably be in the “Man’s Man” category. But Sam was also, truly, a Southern Gentlemen. His great conversational skills, and quick wit, also made him very popular in settings not requiring skiing or fishing gear. However, USC insignias were probably present!
Traveling with Jacque and Sam was always FUN! Their intellects and positive personalities added to memories of places both tame and exotic.
Sam and Jacque raised very accomplished children, and they really were, The All-American Family!
Sam will be missed by his wonderful wife, Jacque, members of his family, and an array of friends. I am sure all would agree…
      Sam was a “CLASS ACT”!
